48 laws of power is a classic book to gain power, respect and value in the world. We have collected the best rules in this book. So every should be able to at least take one or two rules from this book. No one will be able to apply them all. But every one can apply them step by step.

  1. Never out shine the master

This is the first rule of the book. And one of the most important. What this rule means is never make your master feel that you are better than him or her or else you will lose.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Always make those who are above you comfortably superior. In your desire to please and impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite.”

If you make your feel shit about himself he will fire you. But what you can do is always make them feel that they are smarter. That they know more than you do. And they have special abilities that you or no one have. This rule can be used on anyone superior to you like those seniors in college, your teacher you may be thinking like what my teacher. I pay him so How can he be superior? Yeah you pay him or her but if you had the same attitude. You will not fetch all the knowledge they have. Plus, you will be stuck in the same class for a while. Never out shine you master if you want the best for yourself.

  1. Never put too much trust in friends learn how to use enemies

How can this be a rule which is telling me not to trust my friends you may think that. But trust me one this one your best friend today can be your worst enemy tomorrow.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Be wary of friends – they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy. They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove. In fact, you have more fears from friends than from enemies. If you don’t have enemies, find a way to make them.

Think of it like this. If your friends know your secrets than your enemies think from whom you should be afraid. Yeah I agree friends will make you feel good, laugh on you jokes, love you cloth and other stuff. But you never know what they are like from inside. Because honesty rarely strengthens friendship. Think of a day when your friends jokes sucked but you still laughed on them. Or anything that you would disagree with somebody else and agreed it when it was you friend. On the other hand if you learn to use your enemies you don’t trust them neither they trust you but they have more to prove than your friends. They will work better than you former friends. And will do anything to prove themselves. Remember the person who have something to prove will move mountains.

  1. Always say less than necessary

Think of it like this. If people want to hear more while you say less. How much valuable will your word be. People would give greater attentions to your words. Plus you will save yourself from awful scenarios.

In Robert Greene own word:

“When you are trying to impress people with your words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and less in control,

The more you say, the more likely you are to say something foolish.”

When you say less than necessary. Your silence will make people uncomfortable. And they will jump in words to fill that silence. Vomiting valuable words and secrets. Plus, you will seem greater. All the leader and people with power say less than necessary. Make you words that much valuable that people will pay you golden words for your lead words. What that means let me explain. How superior would you feel when you know that by saying less you can reveal more about another person? Silence is one of the most powerful weapons that everyone has but people rarely use it.

  1. Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit.

If amazon makes a makes a billion dollar a year. Who takes the credit? Jeff Bezos not the employees working for Jeff. All the hard work done by the employees and the credit is taken by the CEO of that company. There are ton of examples I can give to you.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Use the Wisdom, knowledge, and legwork of other people to further you own cause. Not only such assistance saves you valuable time and energy, it will give you god like aura of efficiency and speed. In the end you helpers will be forgotten and you will be remembered. Never do yourself what others can do for you.”

Think of it like this if all those works which other can do you be done. How much time you would have to invest in productive stuff. Or you can think of this way if I told you go search for the 48 laws of power. Or if I told you go find. what’s the best way to investing it would take you more than a year. But on other hand you could simply read a book from the people who have done it. Like Robert Greene said in one of his interviews that he reads 200 books before righting a book. And you can use this law in every small part of life. Why built the building while you can find someone else to do it for you and you take the credit. But in some places of your life you should give credit to others. When you are beginner in your field.

  1. Avoid the unhappy and unlucky

If you hangout with nine unhappy people soon you will be the tenth. Cut off negative people from your life. Especially, those people when you sit with them they tell you how unlucky and unhappy they are.

In Robert Greene own words:

“You can die from someone else’s misery – emotional states are as infectious as diseases. You may feel you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster. The unfortunate sometimes draw misfortunate on themselves; they will also draw it on you. Associate with the happy and fortunate instead.”

Have you ever wondered why you feel unhappy when you meet certain people? Have you ever thought why you are so negative? I can guarantee you hangout with somebody who thinks he is misfortunate. I once was with a friend whenever I hang out with him. He would say my life sucks. I want to do this and do that. My father was betrayed. You can trust nobody in this word blah blah blah. He would always make me unhappy and I could not see the world in a better way. And when I noticed him to be the negative, unhappy, guy I cut him off. What changed everything changed his unhappiness was making me unhappy. Let me give you an example. Unhappiness and negativity is like a virus it will spread through your body slowly without you knowing and before you are aware of the infection its deep inside you.

  1. When asking for help, appeal to people’s self-interest, never to their mercy or gratitude

We all come in a stage of our life when we need help from the people more powerful than us. But most of us fail we become blind in our own needs and desires. So we don’t get help.

In Robert Greene own words:

“If you need to turn to an ally for help, do not bother to remind him of your past assistance and good deeds. He will find a way to ignore you. Instead, uncover something in your request or in you alliance with him that will benefit him, and emphasize it out of all proportion. He will respond enthusiastically when he sees something to be gained for him.”

When you step in the game of business. People will rarely help you because you have done something for them in the past. They will ignore you. But if you ask for help in a way that there is a peace of pie for them they are more likely to help you. But if you wait for them to help you on their own. You are fooling yourself. Asking help in way that is guaranteed to work is a skill worth mastering.

  1. Use absence to increase your respect and honor

Don’t be too available for anybody or else you will lose your honor. We don’t value those things which are always with us. Make your self valuable don’t be too available for anybody except your family.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Too much circulation makes the price go down: The more you are seen and heard from, the more common you appear. If you are already established in a group, temporary withdrawal from it will make you more talked about, even more admired. You must learn when to leave. Create value through scarcity.”

Take any company which make money by offering limited version stuff. I mean it’s totally the same product only some colors are changed. Limited addition watches are more expansive than regular watches. So what you have to do is make yourself limited version of yourself. Don’t be too available for everyone all the time. Know when to leave. But if you are in a startup of a business always be available. If you suck at the start you will never reach the end.

  1. Do not commit to anyone

Do commit to anybody. I you are in an argument and before you know anything about that argument if a fool. Don’t make fool of your self don’t take anyone’s side.

In Robert Greene own words:

“It is a fool who always rushes to take sides. Do not commit to any side or cause but yourself. By maintaining you independence you become the master of others – playing people against one another, making them pursue you.”

If you commit to no body you create a sense of greatness amongst others. Of course they will be angry but each side will admire you to be on their side. Plus, you will save your image from being wrong or doubtful. But when you commit the magic is gone you become like anybody else.

  1. Re—create Yourself

Don’t let anyone define who you are. Recreate yourself in every part of your life.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Do not accept the roles that society foist on you. Re—create yourself by forging a new identity, one that commands attention and never bores the audience. Be the master of you own image rather than letting other define it for you.”

Re—create yourself. No one have the right to decide who we are. If you are bad at public speaking                      re—create that part of your life. If you think you are a loser or a person who will never be successful. Erase your old identity and create a new on.

  1. (P#1) Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter.

If you the bees to scatter kill their queen. Basically, if you want to destroy anything strike its root.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Trouble can often be traced to a single strong individual the stirrer, the arrogant underling, the poisoner of good will. If you allow such people room to operate, others will succumb to their influence. Do not wait for the troubles they cause to multiply, do not try to negotiate with them they are irredeemable. Neutralize their influence by isolating or banishing them. Strike at the source of the trouble and the sheep will scatter”

if you strike the core of your problem you are more likely to finish it sooner like Chinese poet Du Fu says.

“If you draw a bow, draw the strongest. If you use an arrow, use the longest. To shoot a rider first shoot his horse. To catch a gang bandit, first capture its leader. Just as a country has its border, so th killing od men has its limits. If the enemy attack can be stopped [with a blow to the head] why have any more dead and wounded than necessary? (Chinese poet Du Fu, Tang dynasty, eight century)

(10) P#2 Never appear too perfect

Never appear too perfect or else others will crush you. We think there is nothing wrong in being a perfectionist but the person who said no one is perfect was also smart. Appearing too perfect can attract some enemies.

In Robert Greene own words:

“Appearing better than other is always dangerous, but most dangerous of all is to appear to have no faults or weakness. Envy creates silent enemies. It is smart to occasionally display defects, and admit to harmless vices, in order to deflect envy and appear more human and approachable.”

When we appear to perfect we get in a great competition. And we attract many awful. Its better to never look perfect or when you feel like you are being too perfect in a discussion. Use a silly joke or share your some silly things they are not important to be true but they will help you look more imperfect. And you will avoid many enemies too.
